Mobile Myths: Why Some Small Businesses are yet to go Mobile

Mobile is one of the most virulent technologies to have infected the world of small business since its inception and eventual popularity. Like all technology it’s constantly evolving and changing and encompassing new features and benefits that make it, increasingly, an absolute necessity in SMEs all over the country and indeed, the world. In a recent Constant Contact survey though, it was found that whilst 66% of SMEs had adopted mobile technology, 34%, of course, hadn’t. Reactively, Small Biz Trends looked a little further into the report and dug out the reasons why these SMEs hadn’t gone mobile. Here are those reasons and how they make up the majority of the myths that surround business mobiles.
Customer Demand
Demand-related reasons ranked highly in the results regarding why businesses were not using mobiles. 56% said they hadn’t received explicit demand for mobile communications, whilst 47% said they hadn’t experienced demand for mobile payment solutions.
Is it a Myth?: Customers are always in need of simpler, more streamlined and efficient ways of contacting you as a business – it’s now more important than ever that your customers can interact with you in the manner they prefer and find easiest. Not having mobile communications as an option could increase your chances of turning these customers off!
Technical Expertise
Many business owners – a third of the respondents in fact – feel they don’t have the technical know-how to start implementing mobile technologies in their company, or even possess the ability to really get the most out of them.
Is it a Myth?: Smartphones and similar such technologies are now more user-friendly than ever before. They may look daunting initially, however the advantages they offer and the gentle learning curve mean anyone can get to grips with them.
Relevancy
Relevancy to the business is, of course, subjective, however with 28% saying they thought mobile was not a relevant factor, it is quite clearly a sticking point presently in the minds of business owners.
Is it a Myth?: With something as undefined as relevancy, it’s difficult to say whether this is or isn’t more of a myth, however as all businesses need to be at the peak of their industry, primed for multi-channel output and ready to move with the market, mobile is increasingly becoming relevant in every business all over the world!
